Gate.io Review: Who It Suits, Fees and Restricted Countries
Gate (formerly Gate.io) is the exchange to open when you want the widest choice of altcoins: the site lists more than 5,400 crypto assets, and new tokens often appear here before they reach the bigger exchanges. Before anything else, check your country: Gate's user agreement bars residents of the US, UK, Canada, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Pakistan and about 30 other places from the global platform.

Gate at a glance
Gate has been running since 2013 and was known for years as Gate.io. The main domain is now gate.com, and the old gate.io address redirects there. When people search for a "gate io review" or "gate.io customer service", they mean the same exchange.
Gate is one brand with several legal entities. US residents are served by a separate company, Gate US, which holds state money transmitter licences. The EU is served by a Malta-based company licensed under MiCA, Japan by Gate Japan, and Dubai by an entity with a VARA licence. Everyone else lands on the global gate.com platform, which is what this review covers.
I use Gate as a second exchange specifically for altcoins. When a token has just launched and is not on Binance or OKX yet, it is often already trading here. For BTC and ETH I keep most of my volume where I am used to the terminal.

Restricted countries: where you cannot use Gate
This section matters more than fees. Clause 2.5 of the Gate user agreement lists "Restricted Locations" whose residents the global platform does not serve. As of October 2026 the list names:
- North America: United States, Canada.
- Europe: United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, Netherlands, Austria, Malta.
- South and Southeast Asia: India, Indonesia, Philippines, Pakistan, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia, Myanmar.
- East Asia: mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, North Korea.
- Middle East and Africa: United Arab Emirates, Iran, Sudan.
- Latin America: Cuba, Venezuela, Argentina; Gate's help article also mentions Bolivia.
- Former USSR: Russia, Uzbekistan, and the Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
The list is open-ended: the agreement says "include but are not limited to" and Gate can extend it without notice. Several large crypto markets, such as Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Turkey, Brazil and Kazakhstan, are not named in it at the time of checking.
Is Gate available in India, Indonesia and the Philippines?
No. All three are named in the restricted list, together with Pakistan and Vietnam. That rules out a large part of Gate's search traffic, so if you live there, look at the exchanges that are licensed or registered locally instead of trying to get around the rule.
What about the US, UK and EU?
US residents can only use Gate US, a separate platform with its own product set, and it is not available in every state. UK residents cannot use gate.com at all. Most EU residents are routed to Gate's European entity, while Germany, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Austria and Malta are on the global platform's restricted list. The current list is in Gate's restricted locations help article.
Russia is on the global platform's restricted list, and Gate's EU entity is bound by EU sanctions: Article 5b of Regulation 833/2014 bars EU crypto providers from serving Russian nationals and residents. The occupied Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk regions are restricted because they are under US and EU sanctions.
Who Gate is good for
- Traders hunting new listings. Gate lists many young tokens on spot, so people come here for coins the larger exchanges do not have yet.
- On-chain token traders. The Trenches section (formerly Alpha) gives access to on-chain tokens straight from the exchange account, no wallet or bridges needed.
- Futures traders on altcoins. Perpetual contracts cover small caps, not only the top 20.
- People who want stocks next to crypto. Tokenized stocks (xStocks) trade against USDT in the same account.
- Passive income users. Simple Earn, staking, Dual Investment and Launchpool sit in one section.
Gate is strongest where breadth matters: young altcoins, on-chain tokens and contracts on small caps. If you only trade BTC and ETH, it has no special edge over other large exchanges.
Gate is a weaker fit for complete beginners. The menu is long, and on day one it is easy to get lost between Trenches, Launchpool and a dozen Earn products.

Gate products
Gate matches Binance, Bybit and OKX on product range: spot, futures, options, stocks, Earn, copy trading, bots and P2P are all there. The difference is emphasis – Gate leans on the number of coins and early listings.
| Product | What it is | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Spot | 5,400+ assets, mostly USDT pairs | Buying altcoins, early listings |
| Perpetual futures | USDT-margined contracts with leverage, funding usually every 8 hours | Long and short with leverage, hedging |
| Options | European-style vanilla options | Experienced traders |
| Tokenized stocks (xStocks) | US stock tokens on spot and futures, launched July 2025 | Stock exposure without a broker |
| Earn | Simple Earn, staking, Dual Investment | Yield on idle coins |
| Copy trading | Mirror a chosen trader's positions | People who do not want to trade themselves |
| Bots | Grid and other automated strategies | Rule-based trading in ranges |
| P2P | Buy and sell crypto with other users | Fiat on and off-ramp via cards and wallets |
| Launchpool and Trenches | Stake for new tokens, access to on-chain coins | New project hunters |
As of October 2026, based on gate.com menus and product pages. Availability can differ by country.
I cover tokenized stocks in detail in the xStocks guide: how the tokens work, who issues them and how they differ from buying shares through a broker. Gate opened its xStocks section in July 2025 with eight tokens, including NVDAX, AAPLX, TSLAX and COINX.
Gate fees
Base rates for a regular account (VIP 0) are in line with the market. Gate shows your personal rate on the gate.com fee page once you log in, and it is worth checking before you trade actively.
| Market | Maker | Taker | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spot | 0.1% | 0.1% | Fees can be paid in GT |
| Perpetual futures | 0.02% | 0.05% | Plus funding on open positions |
| Options | 0.02% | 0.028% | Cut on 5 February 2026 |
| Trenches (on-chain tokens) | 0.5% | 0.5% | Flat rate, cut from 0.8% in October 2026 |
| P2P | 0 | 0 | Gate charges no trading fee |
| Crypto deposits | – | – | Free, the sender pays the network fee |
| Crypto withdrawals | – | – | Varies by coin and network, shown at withdrawal |
As of October 2026: gate.com fee page, Gate options fee announcement of 5 Feb 2026 and Gate's fee guide (updated 16 Oct 2026). Rates change, always check gate.com/fee.
A futures example. A 10,000 USDT position opened and closed with market orders costs 10,000 × 0.05% × 2 = 10 USDT. If that position uses 1,000 USDT of margin (10x leverage), that is 1% of your margin just to get in and out. Limit orders at the maker rate cut it to 4 USDT.
On top of trading fees you pay or receive funding if you hold through a funding interval. On hyped altcoins the funding rate can be many times higher than the trading fee, so check it above the order book before you enter.

Verification (KYC) on Gate
KYC is mandatory for every Gate user. Without it you cannot deposit, withdraw, use P2P or join Launchpool. You need a valid passport, national ID card or driving licence plus a face scan in the app or browser.
According to Gate's help centre, review takes 10 minutes to 12 hours, and up to 24–48 hours if it goes to manual review. Photos must be of the physical document: scans, screenshots and edited images are rejected. The full process with common mistakes is in the Gate sign-up and verification guide.
P2P on Gate
Gate's P2P market lets you buy or sell USDT with other users and pay by bank card, e-wallet or transfer. Gate advertises zero platform fees on P2P trades, so your cost is the seller's spread.
Which fiat currencies and payment methods appear depends on your account's country and changes over time, so check the filter in the P2P section after verification. How to pick a seller and avoid scams is covered in the P2P section and in the guide on withdrawing USDT to a card.
Security, reserves, app and API
Proof of Reserves
Gate publishes proof of reserves built on a Merkle tree and zk-SNARKs, so each user can check that their balance is included. Hacken audited the implementation in January 2024. Gate's own reports show reserves above customer liabilities; the current ratio is on the Proof of Reserves page.
Gate app
The Gate app for iOS and Android mirrors the website: spot, futures, Earn, P2P and KYC. Verification is easier in the app because the face check uses your phone camera. Download it only from the link on gate.com – fake apps with Gate's logo do exist.
Gate API
Gate offers API v4 for bots and third-party terminals, with documentation in the developer section of gate.com. Keys are created in account settings. I always give a key read and trade permissions only, never withdrawals, and bind it to the server's IP address.
Customer service
Support works through live chat on the website and in the app, and the help centre at gate.com/help covers most account questions. Gate staff will never ask for your password or 2FA code; anyone who does in a DM is a scammer.
Gate pros and cons
Pros
- One of the widest coin choices: 5,400+ assets
- Early listings and on-chain tokens via Trenches
- Full product set: futures, options, xStocks, Earn, bots, P2P
- No platform fee on P2P
- Proof of Reserves with a personal balance check
Cons
- Not available in the US (global site), UK, Canada, India, Indonesia, Philippines, Pakistan and more
- Busy interface for beginners
- Many young tokens with thin liquidity and high risk
- Personal fee rates only visible after login
Gate is worth opening for altcoins and new projects if your country is not restricted. For top coins only it is no better than other large exchanges, and young tokens need strict risk management.
If Gate is not available where you live, compare OKX, Bybit and Bitget in our exchange overview, and check each one's country list the same way.
