Crypto for beginners: where to start and how not to lose money

Updated: · 5 min read ·

Start crypto with safety, not with picking a coin: an account on a major exchange with 2FA, a clear idea of what a seed phrase is, and a network check before every transfer. Nearly every beginner loss I've seen came from a wrong address, an exposed phrase or a P2P "seller" paid outside the exchange – not from a market crash. Here is the short route and links to the detailed guides in this section.

Where to start: five steps

Order matters more than speed. Go step by step and your first purchase takes an evening, not a month of support tickets.

  1. Sign up on a major exchange and complete KYC – identity verification with your ID. Without it, deposits, P2P and withdrawals don't work.
  2. Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app (Google Authenticator or similar) – a second code for logins and withdrawals. SMS alone is weaker: a SIM swap can hand your number to a scammer.
  3. Buy a small amount by card if the exchange supports it in your country, or via P2P in INR, NGN or PHP inside the exchange.
  4. Make a test transfer of a small amount between the exchange and a wallet to see how networks and fees work.
  5. Decide where to store: an exchange is convenient for trading; in your own wallet you're responsible for everything, including the seed phrase.

The first two steps protect your account, the last three protect your coins in transit. None of them is optional.

Six safety rules for crypto beginners

1. Seed phrase stays offline

A seed phrase is 12 or 24 words that are your wallet. No photos, no cloud, no chats, and nobody gets to see it. Full guide: what a seed phrase is and how to store it.

2. Authenticator 2FA and a unique password

Use a password you don't use anywhere else, plus authenticator codes. Write down the authenticator backup key as carefully as a seed phrase: without it, losing your phone means days of account recovery through support.

3. Double-check the transfer network

USDT exists on several networks: TRC20, BEP20, ERC20 and more. Send it on a network the receiver doesn't support and the coins may be lost. Bybit, for example, doesn't always recover such deposits: manual recovery costs 200 USD and is only accepted above 500 USD (Bybit help, updated 24 March 2026).

4. On P2P, pay only inside the order

Exchange escrow protects you only while the trade stays inside the order. "Pay me directly", "let's move to WhatsApp" or "confirm the payment via this link" are scam signs. The schemes are covered in P2P scams.

5. Leave unknown tokens alone

A token you never bought may show up in your wallet with a website to "claim rewards". Connecting your wallet there and signing a transaction can hand scammers access to your coins. Another trick is address poisoning: a tiny transfer from an address that looks like one you use, so you copy the wrong one from your history.

6. Support never messages first

No exchange or wallet asks for 2FA codes, passwords or seed phrases. If a "support agent" contacts you first, it's a scammer – logo and blue tick included.

The last row isn't about storage, but it's where beginners lose the most. Futures aren't step one: spot and transfers first, everything else later.

How to store crypto: the short version

If you only buy and sell, keeping a small amount on a major exchange is fine. If you're saving long term, move part of it to your own wallet: a mobile one (Trust Wallet, MetaMask) or a hardware one (Ledger, Trezor, Tangem).

You can't literally store crypto on a pendrive: coins always live on the blockchain, and a device holds only the keys. A USB stick with a key file is just a file that's easy to copy, while a hardware wallet signs transfers without exposing the key. The full comparison is in how to store crypto.

FAQ

Where should a crypto beginner start?
Sign up on a major exchange, complete KYC and enable authenticator 2FA. Then make a small purchase, a test transfer and decide where to keep your coins.
How do I store crypto safely?
Small trading amounts on a major exchange with 2FA, savings in your own wallet, and that wallet's seed phrase offline in two copies.
Can I store crypto on a pendrive?
Coins always stay on the blockchain; a pendrive could only hold keys, and a key file is easy to copy or lose. For offline storage use a hardware wallet.
Do I need a seed phrase for an exchange?
No. An exchange account is protected by password and 2FA. A seed phrase appears only when you create your own wallet.
How much money do I need to start?
An amount you can afford to lose on a mistake. The minimum depends on the exchange and payment method and is shown in the purchase form or P2P ad. Experience with transfers matters more than deposit size.
